Pulque, an ancient Mexican beverage, has been enjoyed for centuries. Derived from the maguey plant, pulque is a milky-white drink with a unique flavor profile. It's often described as having a slightly sour, earthy taste, with a creamy texture.

This alcoholic drink has a deep-rooted history in Mexican culture. It was considered a sacred drink by the Aztecs, who believed it had not only healing properties but also a strong nutritious side to it.

Pulquerías or pulcatas, where close to disappear in late XIX century, due to big political campains, but pulque, just like all Mexican traditions are just to strong to erase. Here are a couple pulquerías to try the beverage of the gods. Get ready, this is as Mexican as it gets!

 

El recreo: Just a couple blocks away from the famous Mercado Merced is on of the oldest pulque places in town.

Los hombres sin miedo: Way off the beaten path, this place has been open for centuries.

La gloria: Not that far from Coyoacán neighborhood, this is a very busy pulqueria where social interaction is really interesting to watch.

Los duelistas: One of the few pulquerías packed with youngsters this artistic place should be on your Mexico City trip.

La pirata: Probably the most legit pulque shop Close to Condesa and Roma neighborhoods.
